There is so much to love about Mexico – yummy tacos, the bright & brilliant colors, guacamole served with every meal, but my favorite element of the Mexican culture is how they celebrate.
Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is really death done right. No subdued quiet reflection of those that have passed on, but rather a kick ass fiesta that honors the life and memory of the dearly departed.
Ok, so the idea of picnicking in a cemetery can be a bit unsettling, but at least you are able to embrace the creepy with candy!
I can still remember the first time I had ever seen a sugar skull – it was the greatest confectionery concept since marshmallow and colored sugar (Peeps for the uninitiated).
One year (I have been threatening to host a Dead of the Dead party for my crafty chicas for quite some time…) I will throw a festive and fun Day of the Dead party and it will be documented here.
Until then take a gander at the Dia de los Muertos celebration that my mentee from The Lower East Side Girls Club and I attended the day before Halloween.
Stay sugary sweet!
Xxoo.
