Sage and stylish are two words that captured my poppa! Happy birthday to this handsome, high waist wearing, world traveler, wise man. Poppy would have been 120 this year. My grandfather dropped Yoda wisdom long before there was a galaxy far far away. His words and knowledge influence every business and life decision I make. I wear the tie tack from his stud set around my neck and his signet ring on my pinky – I even tattooed his monogram as a memorial.
Lester was the most generous, kind, fair and empathetic gentleman and I cherished every moment I was able to spend with him as an adult. He was quite the dandy having owned a successful department store located in what I can only imagine was a cleaner, safer, less bombed out and more prosperous Camden, New Jersey.
So based on that information I am assuming high water/high waisted men’s casual trousers were en vogue in 1971. Granted this isn’t the most flattering photo of Poppy but as an archivist, I adore how evocative it is of the time and place. He is disembarking from a tender while on a Caribbean cruise. I love how the ship’s staff photographer is there to capture this momentous occasion.
Although cruise ships still employ photographers, there was a sense of glamour that begged to be documented even in the most casual of activities. It would be refreshing if just a sliver of that style was prevalent in today’s travel.
Sage and stylish. Always and forever.
xooxoxo,
Jeanie
