Anyone who as entered my home, watched my Small Space Big Style episode or been within earshot of me at a Mexican mercado knows I’m mad for oil cloth. The combination of colors, the juxtaposition of fruit & flowers and the diversity of choice is so appealing that I can’t quite control myself when I see it. Years ago, I happened upon a stash of 6 oil cloth pillows in the basement of my local Urban Outfitters. The darling store manager allowed me to purchase all at a ridiculously low price and within in minutes they were sitting pretty on the vintage cherry red Naugahyde sofa.
The oil cloth covers started to crack & tear from years of bulldogs building pillow forts with them for a more comfortable slumber. It was time to consider changing the cases or purchasing different pillows for the sofa. I had hesitated for weeks assuming the cost of 6 custom covers would be mucho dinero. In lieu of having the local tailor duplicate the cases for me, I went to the source of all things kitsch & Mexican, Love Shine in the East Village.
After perusing and contemplating the vast selection of brilliantly hued bolts of oil cloth, the perfect combination had been selected. Mark Seamon, the store’s affable proprietor and residential deejay masterfully stitched together 6 oil cloth pillow cases for a reasonable sum. I believe the success of this collaboration may have inspired a future line of oil cloth pillows for the store’s houseware collection.
Now the bully boys have new cushions in which to rest their cuddly bodies and I have a bright new look for the living room. ¡Perfecto!
xxoo.
