Closet organization is part art and part science. However, an unusual thing happened to me on Tuesday. I was asked to contribute a feature for an online magazine – that part isn’t unusual, that happens quite frequently (thankfully so). I committed my morning to writing the requested piece and did so 2 days before deadline. The article was written in the style of the site and based on what the chief content officer asked for and was REJECTED!
OK, now that is the unusual part. It wasn’t because it was poorly written, didn’t fit the criteria or needed editing. The CCO said it was because there was ‘nothing special’ about the piece. According to the CCO, she googled the topic, which was at her behest and found 25,000 hits. I guess she was hoping for a fresh take on how to organize a closet in x amount easy steps. Actually what she really wanted was Jeanie.
And the truth is there are only so many ways one can organize a closet of clothing. My style is based on logic and space and I am sure many of my contemporaries apply the same method. But what I realized is that in order for me to produce out of the ordinary results, I need a challenge, obstacle or a pain point to inject my particular POV into the solution.
Closet Organization is Unique for Every Client
Writing a general how-to in so many steps is going to yield the most basic, but helpful information. It is by design intended to cast a wide net to garner the most eyeballs. On the contrary, when a client works with us, we are solving their specific and particular problem. There are no cookie cutter applications on an apartmentjeanie job.
What we do is based on the individual wants, needs and desire of a client. That’s when we get creative, innovative and inventive with our approach to your design dilemma. No 2 clients are alike so no 2 projects are the same.
“apartmentjeanie came in brought color, patterns and truly interesting design elements that sounds like it would cramp the tiny space but actually opened it up into a bright colorful cheery home.”
What my client graciously glosses over is that I announced upon emerging from her microscopic size bathroom that I wanted to cover the entire space in a bold black & white brocade wallpaper. Although I think she secretly thought I was insane, the results were pretty awesome.
I guess that’s what the editor wanted. She wanted my original & fresh style. Yet, I can’t dish that out for mass consumption because that creative jeanius is piqued when I have the opportunity to talk to clients on 1:1 basis. Our team can discuss their daily routines, hear their frustrations, and understand their pain. Then, I can serve them with a style that reflects their taste and a system that sets them up for on-going success. Closet organization needs to be done differently based on every client’s lifestyle.
