Everyone LOVES to display photos; unfortunately not everyone does it well. A collection of mismatched frames arranged on every single surface area in one’s home doesn’t convey the sense of family and friend pride, but someone who isn’t capable of editing and maybe a little insecure.
Photographs are mini (in most cases) 2 dimensional time capsules, but if not presented carefully can project an image of being mired in the past or just extremely impressed by one’s own photogenic quality.
Corralling personal, non-art photography in a specific location allows the photos to tell a story of your life, who you honor and what you value.
When hung in frames that are consistent in style, color, matte or size, the impact comes from the images. A photo gallery creates a focal point, which allows the viewer to be engaged and initiate conversation. When there is sense of order and uniformity, the eye is able to register the content in lieu of being visually assaulted with excessive imagery.
Although I do love the effect of multiple antique silver frames clustered on a tabletop, exhibiting a cohesive photo collection need not be an expensive investment in order to look polished and artistic. For 4×6 photographs, I use super cheap glass clip frames – the lack of a proper encasement emphasizes the photographic content and creates a photo album effect when positioned closely together. Even clothespins can serve as a picture hanger when arranging Polaroids strung along a cord or wire. Keeping it contained is the objective.
Of course, there is also one other benefit to keeping the proliferation of picture frames in check – it will cut down dusting, considerably.
