Sometimes a change of venue requires one to look at old furniture with a pair of fresh eyes. The client’s secretary served as a home office, bedroom dresser and dressing table – as New Yorkers even our home furniture must multi-task. However, when the client upgraded her zipcode, but downgraded her square footage the secretary needed to work overtime.
The old girl was also in dire need of a make-over, especially if it was to take center stage in her new home. This type of upgrade is super easy and can be accomplished in a few hours with a couple of house hold items.
The following tools are all it takes to go from dreary to dreamy:
- few sheets of medium – heavy weight wrapping paper
- adhesive spray mount – the removable version to allow for re-positioning
- double stick tape
- burnisher – anything can be fashioned into one – a ruler, a book, a credit card…
- paint pen
- x-acto knife
I would recommend to spray the shelves and back of the unit with the spray mount, not the paper. Run a strip of the double stick tape along the top of the paper – this will act as an anchor as you gingerly apply the paper to the previously sprayed piece. Make sure the pattern direction on the shelves matches the back wall. In lieu of painting the lattice work with a brush, I opted for a paint pen. It takes a little longer, but allows far greater control hence fewer mistakes and less clean up.
Now this secretary can proudly add display case, china cabinet and dining room credenza to its resume.
xxoo.
